Candidly broaching historical, aesthetic, political, and religious topics, Pettigrew offers an insightful exploration of Spanish culture on many fronts. In addition Pettigrew recounts his awe at monuments and cathedrals, demonstrates his knowledge of regional politics, and shows his republican zeal in joining efforts to liberate Italy from the yoke of Austria. He describes interactions with Spaniards, including the manners of men and attractiveness of women shows keen understanding of Islamic contributions to Spanish history and expresses his sympathy for the plights of peasant societies. Pettigrew's travelogue records his experiences and impressions as an educated Southerner eager to immerse himself in Iberian and Mediterranean culture. This Southern Classics edition makes the volume available publically for the first time and is enhanced with a new introduction by Southern historian and Pettigrew's biographer, Clyde N. Mosse wears her learning so lightly, knitting her historical research so neatly into her narrative, that we never get the slightest sense of being preached or lectured to. Christina Koning THE TIMES Pacey and addictive - Kate Saunders THE TIMES Saturated with a passionate understanding of the region's past in a way that puts more conventional historical accounts to shame. the result is entirely compelling and full of incidental pleasures. It’s an actual problem.īut also, as I said in that first Silber Linings essay, Smith’s “comic book output has been almost uniformly horrible.” When it’s hard enough for me these days to work up the motivation to read stuff I’m sure I’ll like (it’s weird that I own a comic where Batman hangs with dinosaurs and haven’t read it yet), reading a comic that I suspect I’ll dislike is even more of a chore than it normally would be… even for the sake of a funny bit. For one, ever since the pandemic began, my concentration has been shot, and I now struggle to read for long periods of time. Months ago, I promised Comics Beat managing editor Joe Grunenwald that since my first Silber Linings essay was about my love of the obscure comic book villain Onomatopoeia, and my complicated relationship with the character’s co-creator, Kevin Smith, I’d celebrate the first Silber Linings anniversary by finally reading Smith’s Green Arrow run in which Onomatopoeia first appears. Mostly, though… look, I’ll be real with you. 5/24/2023 0 Comments The heart forger rin chupecoI am also finding out the more I read the more easier it’s becoming. I may have to re-read it a couple of times, but then it clicks. My brain has a hard time with most writing styles in general, but I have acclimated to navigate through them through out the years. The way they had formatted it it sounded like the same character was still talking, but you really knew it wasn’t. I had a hard time unraveling some scenes with dialogue that should have been said by the other character. It was chapter 16 or so that had major errors. The errors are anywhere from chapters 10-20…give or take. I am not going to take any starts away for the poor editing job within this book. Let me start by saying this book deserved five stars as per my GoodReads account where it is stated so. I could put in a spoiler warning like this? Meh, same thing. This is because so that I can have a spoiler warning before anyone reads my review. As always, and I am going to do this probably for every full book review, is write one or two paragraphs of an intro or something. 5/24/2023 0 Comments Five survive holly jacksonThere is a point in the book where things really kick into a higher gear in a deadly, blood-soaked scene that is just heart-wrenching. Tempers fly and explosive revelations are made. It is intense and makes for gripping reading, as every little moment counts. When you know everyone is hiding something but they literally cannot move beyond these small confined spaces, the atmosphere is incredibly fraught. The claustrophobia of the setting of the RV serves to heighten the already thickening tension that much more. Five Survive is no exception to this rule, providing a twisty standalone mystery that had me utterly glued to its pages. Every time, she knocks it out of the park and always manages to surprise me. Her ability to meticulously plot a razor-sharp thriller, packed full of twists and turns, is unparalleled. It is no secret that Holly Jackson is one of my all time favourite authors. Five Survive is an exceptional YA thriller, surpassing my super-high expectations to deliver a riveting story expectedly playing with intense paranoia, suspense and earth-shattering secrets.
